The second generation Ford GT supercar hit the Detroit auto show with what you could call fast and furious.
There’s only information released about the new car, here are the new Ford GT Specs we have gathered so far.
From the 2017 Ford GT Specs we have come to know that it is going to be a fast car, really fast and somehow also really light.
Its engine will allow the sports car to pull in more than 600 horsepower.
It sports an EcoBoost engine: the 3.5 Liter Twin Turbo V6. The car will be in an automatic setting. There won’t be a manual counterpart for the 2017 Ford GT.
Specs of the supercar like the carbon-fiber in the Ford GT’s bodywork was given much attention.
The bodywork and chassis tub are and will be hand-laid. Outside suppliers will most likely handle the production.
Best Power to Weight Ratio of Any Car
On the subject of lightness; Jamal Hameedi, Ford’s chief engineer stated that it’s not speed that’s on top of the team’s priority list. The team’s target as he quoted is, “the best power-to-weight ratio of any car on the market.”
Not all of the 2017 Ford GT Specs were impressive. One area is still in need of improvement.
The new GT still sported average aluminum wheels, but Ford is still considering an ultra-lightweight alternative like carbon-fiber rims to achieve a mass reduction.
Built for Aerodynamics
The rest of the car is achieving superior features.
The passenger cell of the GT tapers almost to a part of the tail and near the rear wheels.
This may seem like a typical flamboyant design but these are pathways which force the air to bend in favor of the GT’s movement.
The flat-like buttresses that link the roof to each fender at the rear are curved wings shaped like airfoils. The purpose is to direct airflow to the rear spoiler and create downforce.
Ford GT 2017’s spoiler features an air brake function. The wing can gather extra downforce when necessary. It can tilt and rise vertically or angle up its surface to capture more drag when needed.
The bodywork is built not just for speed but improved handling as well as braking.
If it’s parking you’re worried about, since the rear window is almost horizontal and only feet and a half wide, Ford is considerate enough to have the GT installed with a backup camera just between its diffuser.
2017 Ford GT Price: The Deal on the Estimate
Ford modestly referred to its crowd-rearing concept car as “engineered to keep company with exotics”.
The more Ford laid out its specs and features, the higher the bar for future exotic cars seemed to rise. It becomes apparent that the Ford GT price will be equally exotic.
The Estimated Price for 2017’s Ford GT
Let’s get to the point and reveal the estimated Ford GT price which is roughly $400,000 as told by Dave Pericack of the Ford Performance at the Geneva Motor Show.
Although no exact numbers were dropped, Dave Pericack stated that the Ford GT would cost nearly as much like the Lamborghini Aventador which may be just a few thousand bucks shy of the GT’s estimate price.
The sum is huge and probably hotter than the GT’s debut at the Detroit car show, but it is impressive for its kind.
The average price of hypercars ranges around $1-million, most of which come from brands like Porsche, Ferrari, and McLaren.
Where the Money Is Spent
Still, it must be difficult for other people to absorb how a sports car by Ford could cost so much. As a reminder, this is not your typical sports car.
In some way, Ford GT has embodied the future of both sports and exotic cars; better known today as hypercars.
Ford undoubtedly spent a lot of money on the overall design of the GT but it’s the engine complimented by the architecture that people will be paying for.
Not Just Outwardly Perfect
Ford GT is not just flamboyantly designed, its exterior is exceptionally lightweight for its kind of car and every part of it is aerodynamic.
Its make is meant to complement the engine’s ability for greater speed; more than 600 horsepower as promised by Ford.
GT’s lightweight carbon fiber construction, together with an “active” suspension feature, lower on its own at speed and even manipulate the spoiler for better aerodynamics.
Put the Money on the Engine
There had been a lot of rumors that Ford would be returning to the 24-hrs of Le Mans in 2016.
The year 2016 will mark the 50th year since Ford’s legendary GT40 race car trio took its first victory of Le Mans in 1966.
Next year could very well be another victory because of the improved engine of the Ford GT. Price rises in sports cars when the engine’s performance is advanced.
Ford promises more than 600 horsepower with GT’s EcoBoost V-6 engine, a next-generation twin-turbo engine said to be the most powerful EcoBoost engine to date. That alone justifies a significant portion of the GT’s stunning price.
The 2017 Ford GT Engine: Speed and Handling
When the new Ford GT graced the Detroit Auto Show this year, it dominated the stage with its technologically-advanced lightweight engine.
Next Generation EcoBoost Engine
The new generation of Ford GT is sporting a six-cylinder EcoBoost engine; 3.5 liter V6 to rev up more than 600 HP with 550lb-ft torque.
It is an engine architecture that made viewers dub the standalone concept as the best supercar, so far.
The new Ford GT Engine architecture was derived from and inspired by the same engine carried by the IMSA Ford Daytona Prototype endurance racer.
That very engine architecture won in the 12 Hours of Sebring last year in the United SportsCar Championship series, which raises our expectation for the EcoBoost.
It undoubtedly is a high-performance engine and the best details are kept close for the EcoBoost engine fitted into the 2017 Ford GT.
New Features and Better Performance
What makes the Ford GT engine slightly better than its inspiration is that it features a specialized valve train that reduces friction, which enables a more instantaneous engine response.
It also has a port dual fuel-injection system; mated with a 7-speed dual-clutch transaxle transmission that sends power to the rear wheels.
The Ford GT, unfortunately, will not feature the traditional manual gearbox and will only be available in automatic.
This may be unfortunate for some who prefer the feel of manual driving, but it is mostly favored by many who feel that GT’s capability for racing is safer to experience in an automatic transmission.
Lightweight for Aerodynamics
That’s not all of it; the supercar is targeted to be lightweight despite its ability for power.
The engine itself has no excuse; the Ford GT engine‘s chassis tub is ultra-lightweight and is to be hand-laid, probably by an outside supplier.
See, the mid-engine is built around a passenger cell made of carbon fiber with both aluminum rear and front sub-frames. In a nutshell, the 2ndgeneration Ford GT is not just fast and light but also sturdy.
Besides its engine’s ability to harness power beyond that of an ordinary sports car, Ford GT relies on its bodywork to dominate airflow and wind resistance.
Through its spoiler’s ability to tilt and rise, as well as its buttress wings, the supercar can redirect airflow towards the rear and achieve superior handling despite speed gain.
Lastly, Ford GT engine is paired with carbon-ceramic calipers and brake rotors by Brembo, a company well-known for providing race cars with carbon ceramic discs.
That said, we can expect Ford GT to be nothing slower than a racecar and its engine made for solely for a supercar.
2017 Ford GT Interior: the Futuristic Racer
Ford GT graced the Detroit Auto Show with its stunning aerodynamic look, powerful engine, and intelligent exterior design that raises the standard for future sports cars.
In addition to that, the Ford GT interior design is no less innovative and breathtaking.
The Exterior Design of Ford GT
To give praise to GT’s exterior design first, it is in every way futuristic and intelligent.
The bodywork is sleek and every curve and buttress has a purpose not just for the sake of design.
One of the best features of Ford GT’s exterior design is the doors.
They open swinging upward like a pair of wings. This futuristic detail easily brings out the inner child of automotive fans.
Ford GT’s Interior
Moving on to the cradle of the supercar, the Ford GT interior design is mostly minimalist, especially around the dashboard, with hints of advanced technology.
It is Formula 1 inspired which is bound to give a driver the complete race car experience. The steering wheel alone is multi-functional, sporting buttons and shift paddles.
Behind the wheel is a digital LCD color display instead of an analog instrument cluster.
Another digital LCD cluster is found in the center of the dashboard. This feature will not just serve as your ordinary music/radio display but also a navigation system.
The entire dashboard is set to feature the SYNC 3, an advanced connectivity system. One button in the cabin enables the driver to lift the front end of the car to surpass slightly high-speed bumps or driveway ramps.
The Design Process
The overall look of the Ford GT interior design was made possible through the innovation of customer feedback and techniques such as eye tracking and biometric tests.
Moray Callum, the Ford GT designer admits that the process gave took 14 months to finish.
The team gave attention to specific details like where passengers’ line of sight linger most and how they react to certain types of colors, feature sets, lighting and so on.
All of the popular aspects combined made up the design that finally debuted this year.
All this effort paid off because the interior of the Ford GT indeed showed that every feature is fit for its purpose and all soft materials combine well with the hard technology.
Part of the Ford GT interior designs inspired by Formula 1 is its integrated bucket seats.
The two sports seats are fixed and because of that both the stirring wheel and the pedals are adjustable.
To top off the overall design of the car is two exhaust outlets that look similarly close to that of a jet’s, making the Ford GT’s driver a fortunate guy.
