What is a Drug Attorney
If you are caught with a certain
quantity of prohibited or regulated drugs, you need to hire a drug attorney to defend your case. In most states,
drug possession is a serious crime that is punishable by penalties ranging from jail time to fines, depending on
the type of drug that was found on you and the quantity as well as any prior convictions for drug-related offenses.
First offenders are generally levied lighter penalties while repeat offenders may be given heavier punishments. The
penalties imposed for drug possession vary from state to state and may also include a probationary period after the
defendant has served their sentence and a requirement to undertake community service or attend counseling for
substance abuse problems.
A drug attorney is a lawyer
who specializes in defending cases wherein people have been charged with drug possession or with the alleged intent
to distribute drugs illegally. The attorney will mount a strong defense to get the case dismissed by questioning
the arrest procedure or the way the evidence was gathered. If possible, the attorney may also negotiate a plea
bargain with the prosecuting attorney, under which the client pleads guilty to a lesser offense in exchange for a
reduced sentence.
When engaging the services of a drug
lawyer, it is always best to hire one that specializes in this branch of practice rather than a general criminal
attorney, as they are more familiar with the relevant laws as well as the tactics used by local law enforcement
authorities in securing an arrest. Your lawyer should also have at least a decade of experience in handling drug
possession cases and securing acquittals for their clients, as well as having an exemplary reputation for ethical
behavior. Keep in mind that a conviction for possessing or selling drugs will remain on your permanent record and
may hamper your chances of getting hired to particular sensitive positions and even prevent you from travelling to
certain countries.
