Travel Insurance With Medical
Conditions
The U.S. State Department recommends that most individuals planning a trip abroad obtain travel insurance to
cover any medical expenses incurred during their travel. In most cases, this is a simple matter of signing up with
one of the numerous companies offering such coverage; however, those with pre-existing conditions may have
difficulty in finding a company to underwrite a policy for them. Travel insurance with medical conditions
is available through certain specialty insurance companies, and offers comprehensive medical coverage even for
pre-existing conditions. This valuable protection can literally be a life-saver in case of a serious medical
emergency in a foreign country or remote location.
Typically travel insurance with medical conditions is more expensive and more limited in coverage than comparable
traditional travel insurance plans due to the increased likelihood of medical care being required during the trip’s
duration. Conditions covered include diabetes, epilepsy, heart disease, cancer, and other illnesses that could
require emergency medical care; travel insurance policies typically cover some or all of the cost of urgently
required medical care during the trip. Additionally, transportation to the nearest hospital is usually covered to
some extent as well; this includes helicopter and air travel when necessary to ensure patient health and
safety.
When selecting travel insurance with medical conditions included, it’s not always a good idea to choose the policy
with the lowest cost. Many policies offer significantly reduced benefits in return for providing lower premiums;
this can prove costly to patients who must depend on travel insurance in the event of an emergency. For instance,
the cost of a typical medical flight can range up to $50,000; some discount travel insurance policies only cover
$10,000 or less of this expense, leaving the patient responsible for the remainder of the costs. By obtaining
adequate coverage for possible medical expenses, travelers can ensure that they are well-prepared in case the need
for emergency services arises during their trip. This can provide valuable protection for travelers when travelling
abroad or to remote locations for business reasons or on a sightseeing tour. Obtaining the right travel insurance
with coverage for pre-existing conditions can help travelers enjoy their trip, secure in the knowledge that their
medical expenses will be covered no matter what happens during their travels.
