How to Locate Lost Cell Phone Handsets

Trying to locate lost cell phone handsets can be frustrating and time-consuming. Fortunately, there are a number of ways you can track it down, especially if you have a general idea of where you lost it. The first and most intuitive solution is to simply call the cell phone number from another phone and listen carefully; the ringing will usually pinpoint the location immediately. This is also useful for ruling out various places you may have dropped or otherwise misplaced it. Even if you lost your phone elsewhere, it may be answered by the individual who found it; you can then collect it from them at your earliest mutual convenience.

If a landline or second cell phone is not readily available, there are a few online services that allow you to place calls; these can serve the same purpose. Some are even specifically designed to locate lost cell phone handsets. The free Click to Call function included with Google Maps can also be used to call your cell phone. Simply type in the numbers of your lost cell phone and it will place the call, causing your phone to ring. While this is not as helpful as a direct call would be, since you can’t actually speak on these services for the most part, it can quickly identify the location of your phone if it is in close proximity to you.

Another alternative is to use the GPS tracking function available on many phones. Your cell phone provider may be able to track down your phone using this function; however, many cell phone providers will not assist you to find your phone unless you have already signed up for a GPS tracking service with them. Alternatively, you may be able to locate and install free GPS tracking software that will allow you to pinpoint the cell phone’s location yourself. Usually this requires that the lost cell phone still be powered on and capable of receiving and sending signals, however, so it won’t work in all cases.

If you are uncertain whether your cell phone has been lost or stolen, it is imperative that you inform your cell phone provider within a couple of hours of its disappearance so that you are not held responsible for any calls made after its loss.
