Humana Tricare: Health Care Options for Active Duty and
Retired Military
Humana Tricare offers outstanding health benefits for active duty and retired military members, their families,
eligible former spouses, and survivors of former service members. For military personnel currently on active duty
and their families, basic benefits are provided at no cost. These benefits include outpatient and inpatient
procedures, preventive medicine, prescription drug coverage, mental health and behavioral counseling, maternity
coverage and dental services. Patients receive care through a primary care manager, who oversees all aspects of the
patient’s treatment within the system. For qualified active duty service members and their families, Humana Tricare
medical insurance is provided with no copayment and no annual deductible. Service members who are not currently on
active duty typically must pay a minimal annual enrollment fee and low copayments for medical services
received.
For retired military service members and other eligible beneficiaries, additional flexibility is available through
the Tricare Standard and Tricare Extra plans. These plans allow eligible individuals to seek care at any provider
authorized by Tricare, although the highest benefit levels will only be provided for services obtained from health
care providers who participate in the Humana Tricare network. Additionally, individuals enrolled in one of these
plans may be charged for the portion of the costs of any services obtained from non-participating providers that
exceed the amount allowable by Tricare regulations. Active duty military personnel and their families are protected
against catastrophic health care costs by a maximum out-of-pocket cap of $1,000 per family each year; retirees and
other eligible members have an annual cap of $3,000.
Tricare covers 100% of prescription drug costs for active duty military members and their families and offers
significant discounts on medications for all other qualified members. Additionally, Humana’s Tricare Dental Program
offers significant discounts of 50% or more on standard dental care along with an orthodontic benefit plan. Retired
military personnel and their families can benefit from the supplemental insurance Humana Tricare provides; in many
cases, Medicare will pay a portion of the costs for medical treatment and Tricare will cover the remainder,
allowing the member to pay nothing for covered procedures and visits. This can provide peace of mind to retired
military veterans and their families by ensuring that their medical expenses will be covered, regardless of the
condition of their health.
