Healthcare Careers

As with many career paths in these rapidly changing times, healthcare careers have become more widely varied, offering a variety of options for those who choose to follow this career path. Choices in the future are likely to be even more varied as technology brings new and exciting possibilities to the field.

Types of Healthcare Jobs

The healthcare field contains many different branches and categories. Clinical jobs such as doctors, surgeons, nurses or therapists come easily to mind, but other careers are just as viable if less immediately obvious. Medical billing, insurance processing and coding and other administrative careers also can provide long term and lucrative employment. Other specialties exist as well, including phlebotomy, radiology, sonography and specialized therapies such as respiratory therapy.

Most careers in the healthcare field require advanced education. Doctors, nurses and therapists pursue high-level degrees. Administrative positions can require degrees in accounting or other specialized business education. Even jobs such as medical receptionist require specialized knowledge, though in this case much of this knowledge can be acquired through on the job training.

Dental Careers

Jobs in the dental field are also considered healthcare jobs. Dentists, dental hygienists and dental receptionists all remain in high demand even during economic slowdowns. Dental offices also require X-ray technicians, oral surgeons and anesthetists. Insurance record keeping, coding and billing are also important in the dental field. Education in the dental field is also quite rigorous, with a dental degree requiring several years of study and training.

Miscellaneous Healthcare Positions

Other healthcare careers include massage therapy, physical therapy, psychology, pharmacology and medical transcription. Any of these jobs could lead to a rewarding long-term career. In the future, even more jobs will likely emerge in the healthcare field, including genetic consultation, stem cell therapies and other applications of growing technology such as cloning. The field of alternative medicine and holistic care seems to be experiencing rapid growth, as well, providing even more options for those interested in pursuing employment in this field.

Overall, the healthcare field provides many career options as well as great potential for exciting growth.
