How to Spot Bogus Distance Learning
Doctorate?
Bogus distance learning doctorate programs do exist and individuals need to be aware of the red flags indicative
of online programs often termed "diploma mills." There are several ways in which an individual will be able to
identify these bogus programs. While ensuring an online program's authenticity may require a little investigation,
the time invested in this endeavor will be well worth it. When attempting to determine if an online program is
valid, individuals need to research the program's listed accrediting agencies. Additionally, individuals need to
review the program's admission requirements, time in which the degree can be earned, and charges associated with
the degree program.
A bogus distance learning doctorate program may boast an impressive list of accrediting agencies. Unfortunately,
many of these accrediting agencies are themselves bogus. In order to determine if an online program has true
accreditation through legitimate accrediting agencies, individuals may contact the Council of Higher Education
Accreditation for assistance. This agency can help individuals verify that an online program has actual
accreditation. Another element individuals will want to investigate is the program's admission requirements.
Individuals should be wary of programs that do not require any type of test scores to be considered for admission.
Some diploma mills only require that individuals have a credit card. Others may instruct potential students to only
submit previous transcripts or GPA scores.
If a distance learning doctorate program states that an individual can earn a degree within 30 days, the online
program is most likely bogus. Individuals should expect to spend at least three years pursuing their doctorate
degree. It is not possible to earn any type of college degree within 30 days. Diploma mills may offer a flat rate
for their degree program. Flat rates are usually a sign of a diploma mill. Veritable colleges and universities
charge a fee per credit hour. These are just a few ways in which individuals can ascertain whether an online
program is bogus or legitimate.
