Dental Insurance
A number of different types of dental insurance plans are available through employer-sponsored plans or for
purchase by individuals or families. Typically, these insurance options cover part or all of basic dental care
services while offering coinsurance for more extensive procedures. Some offer a higher level of coverage for
in-network care, while others allow members to obtain services from any dentist.
Dental HMOs cover visits to in-network service providers, but typically provide greatly reduced or no benefits for
out-of-network care. PPOs allow out-of-network services, but pay a greater percentage for in-network care; both
HMOs and PPOs generally provide preventive and diagnostic care at little or no cost to their members. Dental
discount plans are also available; while these are not actual insurance, they can provide significant savings on
the cost of procedures performed by participating dentists.
