How to Compare Dental Plans
Few decisions are as important as deciding which dental plan is the right one for your family. Before making a
commitment, compare dental plans to decide which one provides the most comprehensive coverage for your
needs. Doing so ensures that you have a plan in place should a dental emergency arise. Having a solid dental plan
also means that your family will be able to receive the kind of quality preventative care they need in order to
avoid costly corrective dental procedures.
When you begin to compare dental plans, carefully consider the type of coverage that is necessary. Does anyone in
your family have a pre-existing condition which might require extra care or treatment? If so, then it may be wise
to purchase a plan that provides a good deal of coverage for procedures that go well beyond routine care. Although
these plans may have higher premium payments, they will prove less expensive in the long run than having to pay a
lot of out of pocket expenses in addition to paying for a less comprehensive plan. If, on the other hand, your
family enjoys relatively good dental health, then a more basic plan may suit your needs for annual checkups,
cleanings, and X-rays. It is difficult to foresee when the need for further dental care might arise, but with
quality preventative care, you are less likely to require costly treatments further down the road.
Also carefully consider who your dentist will be with each dental plan. Chances are that you will be provided with
a list of potential providers. Perhaps your current dentist is on this list or perhaps not. If not, ask your
dentist which plans they honor, and which of these plans they personally recommend. If you do not currently have a
preferred provider, ask friends and co-workers to make a recommendation for a qualified professional. Taking the
time to compare dental plans ensures that your family receives the best possible care.
