The Requirements of CNA Schooling

Certified Nursing Assistants assist the nurses in giving medical care to the patients. To become a certified nursing assistant, one has to undergo training and get a formal CNA schooling. Most of these programs span for a number of weeks to months. Aside from the theoretical lessons in the classroom, the training also involves hands on lessons that enable the CNA aspirants to practice real life CNA duties. There are plenty of opportunities for Certified Nursing Assistance in varied health care institutions. Thus, if one aspires to become one, one should get the required CNA schooling at once.

Aside from education a CNA aspirant should have skills and characteristics in order to be qualified nursing aid. One must be physically strong enough to be able to watch over patients and sometimes lift them when the need arises. A certified nursing assistant must also be compassionate and naturally driven to serve people in need of such care. One must also have good people skills, as a CNA will be directly in contact with patients all the time. One with a good sense of humor and wisdom will be important on the job. Patience will also go a long way in being a Certified Nursing Assistant.

Aspirants to become Certified Nursing Assistant should have a high school diploma to qualify for the training program. These training programs involve clinical training and classroom training. Although the requirements slightly differ in different areas these training programs are available in nursing homes, health care institutions and community colleges. The training program culminates in certification test. Aspirants are required to have at least 75 hours of classroom lessons and 16 hours of clinic training.

The courses in the CNA schooling and training program cover topics that range from nursing skills, nutrition, and safety of home. It also touches on the subjects such as the changes in physical, emotional and mental aspects in an elderly. Some programs may extend to medical subjects such as anatomy and complementary medicine.

There are also cases that the CNA training can be availed while the aspirant is still in high school. This happens when the CNA training is incorporated in the vocational training program that is instigated by the high school institution and the community hospital.

The certification test that aspirants take after the training comes in two parts. Some of the CNA aspirants who have undergone training postpone taking the exams for immediate work. However, if one wants CNA employment for the long term, one should pass the test after having a formal CNA schooling.
