Advantages and Disadvantages of Online Education

Earning a college degree online has become increasingly popular in recent years as individuals are discovering the benefits and rewards of online education. These are just a few of the areas of study in which an individual may earn an associates degree, bachelors degree, or masters degree online. While there are many advantages to online education, there are also disadvantages associated with online education. Individuals desiring to earn a degree online will need to carefully weigh each and determine the path that is right for them and their particular situation.

For many individuals online education is their only option. These individuals have families and work full-time jobs, and these obligations do not allow for the time or flexibility needed to attend traditional college classes. In some cases, individuals would have to drive an hour or more to attend classes because the college or university is not in close proximity to their home or work. In cases such as these, online education offers many advantages. Advantages of online education include: flexible class schedules, students learn at their own pace, costs may be less as relocation is not required and students can continue to work full-time, peers may include students from across the globe, and professors are accessible by email.

There is always two sides to every coin, and the same is true for online education. While online education offers many advantages, it also carries with it some disadvantages. One of the biggest disadvantages of online education is the fact that online students are not afforded the opportunity to interact face-to-face with their professors or peers. Most communication between online students, their professors, and their peers is carried out through email. Additionally, not every program offers coursework online. Some college degree programs require students to attend classes on-campus.
